Living in a tropical climate can be tough on EV batteries. Learn how to manage heat, charging cycles, and storage to ensure your battery lasts for a decade or more.
Heat is the Enemy (තාපය බැටරියේ සතුරායි)
Sri Lanka's average temperature of 30°C is not ideal for Lithium-Ion batteries. However, with smart habits, you can mitigate degradation.
1. The 20-80 Rule
Try to keep your battery between 20% and 80% charge for daily use. Charging to 100% generates more heat and stress on the cells. Only charge to 100% when you are planning a long trip (e.g., Colombo to Jaffna).
2. Time Your Charging
Don't plug in immediately after a long drive when the battery is hot. Let it cool down for an hour. Ideally, use a timer to charge in the early morning (2 AM - 5 AM) when the ambient temperature is lowest.
3. Avoid Frequent Fast Charging
While DC Fast Charging is convenient, frequent use accelerates wear. Rely on slow AC charging at home for 90% of your needs.
